Perceptor finishes repleacing the last of the tools he and Cureall used to repair Blaze's weaponry with a soft sigh. He pauses for a moment to peek through the doorway into his office, pleased to see Cureall finally offline. He is still concerned about her, however. Though she was hiding it well, he could still sense her tension as they worked. He must speak to Rodimus about Spike's curious behavior.

Checking the chronometer, he hopes that he is not disturbing his prime when he cues up his comm.

/Rodimus? Are you available? I need to speak with you./

"Cureall is finally resting," Perceptor replies apologetically as he nods towards the open doorway into his office, his voice low.

"She came to me this afternoon in... considerable distress. Are you aware of any plan Spike had for sending Daniel away to a restricted access educational facility in order to 'make friends with humans his own age and be stable'? As well as restricting communications and access to Daniel from his Autobot friends?" he asks, getting straight to the point.

*frowns, deep in thought* This doesn't ring true. It's not like them to do something like that without saying anything... something's wrong.

*sighs regretfully* I hate to do this. *turns toward the nearest console, suddenly full of purpose* Metroplex, security override two-three-two, voiceprint Rodimus Prime. Show me the most recent communication regarding the location of Daniel Witwicky.

ACKNOWLEDGED, RODIMUS.

*The voice comes from everywhere and nowhere - from speakers set in the walls at intervals, really, but that's not quite as dramatic. One of the cameras reorients and projects an image on the opposite wall, a bit fuzzy but still recognizeable as Spike, at his desk. The phone rings, a tinny noise thanks to Metroplex's compressed recording, and Spike-on-the-wall picks it up and begins to speak. His voice and gesture become increasingly more agitated.*

*Although Rodimus and Perceptor cannot hear what is being said on the other end of the line, Spike's end of the conversation is more than enough to reveal the truth of Daniel's disappearance. Metroplex shuts off the recording just as Spike gets up from his desk, his body language tense.*

END FILE.

Perceptor's expression has grown very serious, very hard. He knows too well how irrational the loss of one's offspring can make one behave. He steps up to the terminal.

"With your permission, Rodimus, I will begin a trace of all communications received by the Witwickys within seventy-two hours prior to that transmission up to present time," he offers, his voice tight with supressed anger. "While I do so, would it be advantageous for you to contact Spike and Carly?"

*Rodimus glances at her briefly, still too angry to give in to his normal short-attention-span impulses.* Do that, Perceptor, but use the best encryption we have. The fact that Spike and Carly feel the need to deceive us means they believe whoever has Danny is capable of some heavy hacking.

"Metroplex, if you please, override all security protocols for this location. Purge all security data logs and monitor files for this location to a timestamp of thirty minutes elapsed, until further notice, please."

"Thank you very kindly, Metroplex," Perceptor replies absently as his hands continue to flash over the console. He barely registers Rodimus's departure.

"Cureall, it is imperative that I am not disturbed, nor that anyone attempts to observe my actions. Metroplex has ensured electronic security, however with the doors still requiring repair, I will need you to maintain guard over the entry to the laboratory," he states, though, in his defense, his voice is pitched to make it more of a polite request, albeit an urgent request, rather than an order.

Cureall's mouth drops open for a moment...then her energy feild suddenly flairs up angrily as a loud sizzleing noise emits from her. If the world had any justice at all, this would be followed by a rattlesnake's rattle and the theme music to The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

"Perceptor...you did not answer the fragging question," She say through her teeth, "What is going on and what the frag has happened to my Daniel?"

If he had a lick of sense he would be wise to turn around and answer the question.

He has sense. However, he is also quite thoroughly engaged in his task.

"Your Daniel has, apparently, been abducted," he replies without turning around, concentrating on the console. He does, however, then spare her a very brief look. "We will find him, Little Sister. But you must let Rodimus attend to Spike and Carly," he warns her gently, trying to forestall any attempt to charge off on her own. "And I truly do need you to protect the physical security of this facility while I work. It was not your fault, Little One. Spike did not send him away... But be certain that we will see him brought back."

Cureall still has the angry feild going on. But now it's directed at some one else entirely. A string of curses in several languages flies out of her vocalizer as she stomps over to the door. She plops down into a sitting position and glares daggers at anyone who even dares come with in opticshot of her.

She really wishes she had something to pound the slag out of right now.

"Your devotion is admirable, Little One," Perceptor replies absently as he continues to work. "However, the object in the security measures is to not arouse suspicion. Spike obviously felt that he was being observed and needed to maintain a veneer of subterfuge to protect Daniel."

He pauses in his work long enough to give her a very serious look. "Please believe me when I say that I do love you, Little Sister. However, if you cannot maintain your calm, or at least maintain an outward appearance of calm, for the safety and security of young Daniel, I will be forced to place you in involuntary stasis lock for the time being. I was trained well by Ratchet, and have at my disposal many varied techniques to overcome your operational defenses against such measures. I do not wish to be forced to utilize such drastic measures on you Little One."

"I'm quite certain that I do not wish you to be more like Rodimus and I, Little One. Two occassionally tragic and morose mechs in this facility are enough without adding a third," he replies drily, trying to deflect her mood with a touch of very bad humor.

He glances up at Wheeljack, a curious flash of relief flooding his systems at the engineer's return.

"Young Daniel has been abducted," he replies quietly. "Spike and Carly were concerned enough about his safety that they attempted to deceive the Autobots and hide the event. Rodimus is speaking with them now. We have begun tracing communications, and have enacted strict security protocols to mask the trace."

Wheeljack nods and crosses the room to his new mate's side, worried about him. "Are you okay?" he asks, wrapping an arm around Perceptor's waist and hugging him gently. He feels relieved just to have that bit of contact, and he remembers in a flash how restless he and Ratchet were at first, when their bond was new. "We need to stick close at first, or we'll get twitchy," he murmurs in Perceptor's audio. "You're stuck with me now." Wheeljack grins in his way and kisses the scientist's cheek.

Perceptor sighs, feeling a flush of relief fill him at the contact. He hadn't noticed how tense he was getting until it left him. "I am better now," he murmurs in reply. "Thank you."

He would like nothing better in that moment than to pull Wheeljack into his arms and simply hold him for as long as possible, however, his current duties are too important to shirk, even for his bondmate. Cold guilt flashes through him as he thinks that. He compromises by turning his head to return the kiss. Though he feels more calm, more centered with Wheeljack pressed up to his side, the still-cold fractures in his spark pulse sullenly at him. He does not even want to imagine what Spike and Carly must be going through at the moment, knowing that their child is most assuredly in danger. He, at least, can pretend that his daughters are still safe.

He shoves those thoughts away and returns his attention to Wheeljack. "That pleases me fine," he replies, with a small, tight smile, before turning his attention back to his work on the console.

Perceptor nodded. "Yes, actually."

With a few brisk commands inputted into the console, he dumped the data he'd already analyzed onto the console beside his own. "I would appreciate it if you would double check my results. I am, unfortunately, not finding anything useful yet, and I would appreciate another set of optics to be certain that I am not missing anything vital."

/Stay with me, Wheeljack, please?/ he asks in private comm. He can almost feel the engineer's restlessness - he certainly feels his own echoes of it, at any rate. He wonders if this is a relfection of the "twitchy" feeling Wheeljack had warned him of, or if it was simply his reaction to Daniel's abduction. Whichever it was, he felt better for having his bondmate near. He hoped that it was reciprocal.

/I love you, too./ He sighs softly with relief, better able to concentrate on the task at hand now.

Not that it helps, in the long run; though there are several promising leads, they quickly fade away into nothing. Whoever this is, certainly has some highly advanced tools at his disposal. Several times, the tight encryption is challenged by reverse tracer programs, which are quickly thwarted by the multiple layers of firewalls and computational algorithms that mask their work. Perceptor is confident that the tracer programs have not detected them, but only because of the extra security measures which he had Metroplex initiate before begining work.

It is very frustrating, especially when his attempts to track those very same tracer programs fail, time and time again. The signs of their passge fade too quickly, as if the programs themselves were ghosts in the vast network.

Perceptor can feel his temper rising slowly. He does not take such failure gracefully. Not when young Daniel's life depends on it. He pushes on.

So intent on his work is he, that Perceptor barely registers the request at first. After a moment, as the latest line of code flashes by, he glances over at Wheeljack.

"Ah... I am adequately fueled," he replies absently. Used to long hours when he is deeply engrossed in a project, Perceptor is still quite alert and intent on his work. A subroutine informs him that his energy levels are sufficient to keep him operational at acceptable efficiency levels for at least another thirty six hours before he will be forced to seek recharge. Perceptor blinks as his fingers still on the console. Wheeljack has always been one of the very few beings that he feels free to be wholly himself around. The engineer quite easily keeps up with even Perceptor's most technical explanations and discussions, despite the plain-talking outward appearance. It is because of that, that Perceptor sometimes forgets the basic fundamental differences between them.

Perceptor is quite used to extended periods of inactivity as he makes detailed observations, often of incredibly miniscule experimental bodies. He can be content with staring at a screen or a circuit or even a molecule for hours on end without pause, before moving on to the next observational subject for another lengthy stint. Though he prides himself in his ability to fairly well hold his own in most situations, Perceptor is not, by design or intent, a truly physical being.

Wheeljack, however, is used to much more physical and interactive activities. He has always been far more given to construction, rather than observation. While Perceptor's experimentation involves a great deal of pure observation, Wheeljack's involves a great deal of hands on interaction before a very limited amount of observation.

Despite how well their skill sets intertwine and compliment each other's, it occurs to Perceptor in that moment how very different they truly are. And how very patient Wheeljack has been with him up to this point.

He does not feel right, leaving his work uncompleted, not with Daniel's life in the balance. He also does not feel right taking advantage of his mate.

As yet another potential lead fades away into the electronic ether, Perceptor sighs. Daniel needs thier diligence, but thus far, it has been little more than an excercise in futility.

"I am sorry, 'Jack," he replies quietly. "I did not mean to be so thoughtless. You are correct: a break would be advantageous."

Wheeljack smiles, glad that Percy is starting to see it his way. "When I get stuck on a problem, I like to take breaks a lot to regroup," he explains, taking Perceptor by the hand and hauling him away for a walk and a little energon. "It helps me see different sides to go at the problem from. I wonder if maybe we're going at this from the wrong angle."

He smiles a little as he hauls Percy to the mess hall for energon, and he wonders absently if they still call it the mess hall now, or if the old nickname has faded into the past like so many of their friends. "A little energon helps me think, too. Ratchet and I did our best troubleshooting over a couple mugs of energon."

"Yes, I recall," Perceptor agrees with a sad little smile of his own. He'd watched them often enough, under guise of going over some datapad or another. He'd been involved in a few of those discussions, in fact, however he was just as content to sit back out of the way where they wouldn't notice him and observe them.

Before he can allow himself to dwell on that, and possibly affect Wheeljack's mood, he turns his thoughts back towards their work. "I am begining to suspect that we may be forced to wait for the individual to contact Spike again. Perhaps by comparing data-sets, we may find an anomaly that could indicate a potential origin. Or perhaps we will be fortunate enough to catch the actual signal as it is being broadcast. I have nearly exhausted all other avenues of investigation, for the moment," he admits with a frustrated sigh.

"Like I said, this looks easier on TV," Wheeljack agrees amicably, getting them both some energon and sitting them down in a corner booth, away from the other Autobots.

"It's a guarantee that they'll contact him again, for ransom," he reasons. "So we just have to make sure we're listening and they don't know, right? Which is easy enough, since Metroplex can tap the call without them being the wiser, and we can trace it from there. I think at this point, we just need to wait."

A peculiar sparkle comes to Wheeljack's optics. "I know what we can do to pass the time," he says wickedly.

"I believe it will be more involved than a simple tap and trace, as you put it," Perceptor observes as he accepts his energon. "After all, we already have that at our disposal on the initial contact. Perhaps a more proactive sensor net, shielded amidst an algorithmic logic gate would yield us the data we require."

In typical Perceptor fashion, he does not take defeat gracefully, nor does he find it easy to put down a problem before it is solved. His stubbornness can be quite daunting at times. Not to mention frustrating.

He totally misses Wheeljack's tone as he continues processing further ideas. "Oh? What do you suggest?" he asks before tipping back another slug of energon.

Perceptor's optics are quite wide and more than a little glazed as he listens to Wheeljack. The engineer comes perilously close to receiving a surprised shower of energon, however Perceptor manages to choke it all down in a rather uncomfortable lump. He can't quite tell if that buzzing he is seeing/hearing/feeling/tasting is the result of the too-large gulp of energon slamming his systems, or his spark doing internal acrobatics.

Primus help him, but he is so sorely tempted. He can only imagine what Cureall's reaction would be to finding them playing, newly bonded or not, while her Daniel is still missing and possibly hurt or worse, not to mention what Rodimus would say, to say nothing of Spike and Carly, and, oh Primus he does not need this temptation right now, damn you Wheeljack! He swallows hard to clear his vocalizer, even has his oh-so-helpful processor begins flashing through vivid mental images.

"'Jack... we still... have work to... do..." he replies weakly. "And I made a promise... not to overindulge in high-grade... anymore."

Perceptor offers him an almost shy smile. He is not used to feeling these emotions, not this strongly, and not with any real hope of having them reciprocated. He feels a little lost, still, by the very sensation of being found. It's dizzying.

The guilt isn't helping, either. He truly cares for Daniel and Spike and Carly. He wishes that there was more he could do to assist, to fix everything. But there is also that part of him that is very frightened. He's spent so long wistfully watching from the outside, then mourning, only to have Wheeljack impossibly returned to him, and more. His spark keeps whispering to him to make the most of every moment before his mate is taken away from him.

He compromises by scooting a little closer. "As am I," he replies, before glancing down at his mug. "I... promised not to overindulge anymore. I, ahem, did not promise to give it up entirely."
